The Importance of the Gluteal Muscles
The Glutes are a key postural muscle and can often be ‘lazy’ putting pressure on the lower back and hamstrings. The Gluteus group (Maximus, Medius & Minimus) stabilize the hip joint and are involved in all actions of the hip, flexion, extension and rotation. It is important to invigorate these muscles to remind them they have a ‘job’ to do. When you are walking give your butt a little squeeze and you will extend and strengthen your stride. Squats and lunges are great exercises to strengthen the glutes and don’t forget to stretch them afterwards. Hug your knees to your chest and also add some rotation to the stretch.
